Background Removal on Budget with XSplit VCam

Removing your background used to be a daunting task as you traditionally need a green (or blue) screen, proper and complicated lighting, and a software that allows you to combine it all for that sleek chroma effect. Hence the reason it’s mainly only used in a professional environment.

Over the course of time, various all-in-one solutions have been developed with the aim of eliminating that barrier and while they’ve been usable, none of them could come anywhere close to the quality that a proper setup could offer. Until now.

Introducing XSplit VCam

XSplit VCam lets you remove, replace, or even blur your background without the need for a green screen for barely any CPU processing power. Here’s a video showcasing it all.

It’s the perfect tool whether you’re into content creation live streaming various types of content, vlogging and podcasting, or if you’re using it for personal and business purposes doing consultation calls, sales meetings or providing customer support. Take a look at the three quick demonstrations below showcasing different use cases.

Availability

XSplit VCam will be rolled out initially to existing Premium license holders so if you’re one of them, make sure to head on to the VCam page to get started. Depending on feedback, wider roll out will come after. Make sure to follow us on our social channels for an announcement when it becomes available to all.

You can read the full release notes or just have a look at some highlights below.

PS: Presentation, broadcast channel settings, user settings continue to be shared between the stable installation and PTR, so before running the PTR then backup your existing presentation.

Highlight of new features and improvements

  • Dedicated CPU/GPU modes: Setting in Tools ->General-> Advanced that allows users to prefer loading CPU or GPU during mixing and broadcasting. • Added loop options for each video source and Video Playlist item (Hot request)
  • Media Slideshow: Added option for webm and custom timings (Hot request)
  • Improved Hotkey Manager (Keys without modifiers, mouse XButton1 & XButton2, and MIDI support) (Hot request – testing still in progress)
  • Added ā€œNew sceneā€, ā€œLoad sceneā€, ā€œSave sceneā€, & ā€œDuplicate scene” menu items
  • Added support for Source transitions on scene enter and exit (Finally done, we had this is backlog for far too long-:)
  • Optimized compatibility of Virtual Camera and added list of supported resolutions
  • Faster and less CPU intensive MJPEG decoding
  • Support for Alpha in NDI output
  • Optimized CPU usage for hardware devices

Services

  • Twitch Chat (HTML5): Added chat icons, timestamps and default colors options
  • Beam FTL improvements
  • Updated to FTL SDK 0.9.4
  • Added support for stream recording
  • Improved speed testing on pre-stream
  • Auto ingest selection based on SDK auto ingest
  • Facebook live chat and comment viewer
  • Updated Facebook broadcast plugin
  • Scheduled Live
  • Change Post On options
  • Enclose event name & group name in quotes in the Post As list
  • YouTube (Nothing yet, but it’s coming)
  • Support for broadcasting to QNAP NAS

XSplit Broadcaster 3.5 is now available

In this version update, we put more focus on fixing bugs from the previous versions but we also made improvements and optimizations to features that already exist.

For more notable features, we have added the integration of Blackmagic SDK as well as adding Skype sources via NDI. Another area of emphasis was Facebook integration and making the streaming experience as fluid as possible for both established creators and newcomers alike.

Shout out to all the PTR folks who helped us get this out faster than expected. You know who you are!

For a complete list of all the things in this update, go to our release page here. You can update to this version via downloading from our website or by going to Help >> Check for Updates on the application.

Happy streaming!

XSplit 3.4 UI Improvements and Facebook Support

XSplit Version 3.4

XSplit 3.4 is now live and available for download, featuring an improved overall experience that makes streaming easier than ever before.

In this release we have focused on UI and usability improvements, along with several improvements targeted at Facebook users.

We have also made a whole host of other improvements under the hood, paving the way for a better and more powerful streaming experience, including further improvements for Facebook, Twitch, Youtube and Mixer users planned with our future updates.

For a full breakdown of new features and improvements see below:

Usability Improvements

  • We’ve cleaned up the Output menu on your top bar with the three basic Output functions occupying their own menu. You’ll see your streaming outputs under Broadcast, and Local Recording and Playout features like NDI occupying their own menus as well.
  • Additional visual cues were added to these menus so you can better tell at a glance what outputs are running under each category, as we know how precious each second is when you’re live.

Source List Box

  • Sources can now be only accessed from the source list box, and we’ve made it easier for users with multiple widgets for each service installed to find the right output as each service would have it’s own group in the source menu.

Facebook Optimizations

  • Source widgets have been beefed up, starting with Facebook. The Facebook Live plugins have been improved to automatically connect to your live videos, eliminating the step of manually retrieving video ID’s after you’ve gone live.
  • If you’re signed in to XSplit using Facebook, all your Facebook widgets and outputs should now always be signed-in automatically as well. Stream directly through your feed or any of the Pages you manage. Streams can also appear on fb.gg, Facebook’s new gaming video destination for discovering gaming video content.

Interview with SuperMCGamer of Zeldathon

With XSplit once again sponsoring this year’s Zeldathon Champions, we thought it would be awesome to give you guys some insight about the event and the brainchild behind it, SuperMCGamer.

XSplit Supports Zeldathon Champions

Matthew Moffit aka SuperMCGamer is one of our all time favorites, not only because he’s been using XSplit since pre-XSplit days, but because he’s one of the best in the business. He’s part of our Elite Program and we’ve worked with him many times in the past (here’s one).

We decided to pick his brain a bit ahead of Zeldathon Champions and here’s the exchange.

You’re a popular figure in the space but for those who don’t know you, tell them a bit about yourself

SuperMCGamer: I am MC, I am the Executive Director of Zeldathon. I also work on various other charity projects such as Direct Relief Gaming.

Tell us about Zeldathon and what inspired you to start it

SuperMCGamer: Zeldathon started back in 2009. After watching a group called The Speed Gamers streaming on Ustream for charity, I worked with my friend Zak to start Zeldathon. We played Zelda for 36 hours on a under-powered laptop and raised just over $300 for Child’s Play Charity. After that, we just kept trying to improve, buying new technology, bringing in more entertainers, and working to get better at our games. Now, we’ve raised nearly two million dollars for charity, and are heading into our 22nd event this June.

What’s the most rewarding thing about running an event like this?

SuperMCGamer: Every event, we keep learning more about production and how to make our event something that is appealing for everyone to watch. But more than that, we keep hearing from charities how surprised they are that gamers can bring so much money and awareness to their cause. It’s really rewarding to hear that we are not just changing entertainment, but how non-profits fundraise on a high level.

You’ve been using XSplit for a long time. What are your favorite features?

SuperMCGamer: XSplit has been instrumental in making our events as amazing as they are. The infinite scenes that were added have allowed us to not fuss with multiple files and we can contain our entire event in one UI. If we ever need to make adjustments on the fly, the Preview Editor and Split View features have helped us keep a high production value by avoiding editing live. However, overall, our favorite features are just the great options on every source. The quick adjustments and settings for everything really allow us to make an experience that is all our own.

What tips can you give aspiring streamers who want to be like you someday?

SuperMCGamer: Any streamers out there trying to build an event need to remember to never settle for what they have. Constantly look into how to improve your event. Microphones, cameras, overlays, entertainment, game skill. Everything can be improved over time, just keep at it and don’t worry about the numbers. Have fun with it.

You can support Zeldathon by spreading the word on your stream and social media channels. It begins on June 15th 2018 and will be live streamed non stop at twitch.tv/supermcgamer.

How to Stream with Elgato Stream Deck

Elgato released Stream Deck just recently (2017) but it didn’t take long before it gained popularity for content creators. While not a must-have, It has become an integral tool for people who want to be able to do more with their stream. This post is a step-by-step guide on how to use the Elgato Stream Deck with XSplit Broadcaster.

How to stream using Elgato Stream Deck

First of all, make sure you have the latest version of both XSplit and the Stream Deck software from Elgato.

XSplit Broadcaster and Elgato Stream Deck software

Once you have both installed and have XSplit opened, you will have an extension called the ā€œElgato Stream Deckā€ which will allow XSplit to interface with the hardware. Open the Elgato software as this is where you will set things up for controlling various elements of your stream in XSplit Broadcaster.

Elgato Stream Deck

The procedure is very similar with every function that you want to set up. It mostly involves assigning the function to a button, labeling and adding a thumbnail to each, and then setting up the specific options for each functions. Here’s how to set them up.

Scene switching

This is a pretty handy option if you want to do scene switching via your Stream Deck.  To start, drag the scene function to a button in your Stream Deck. In the bottom menu, you can name it and select which scene it goes to when pressed.

Toggling sources

If you want to enable or disable your scene sources, then this is the option for that. Drag the source function to the layout then at the bottom, select the source that you want to toggle. There is a ā€˜toggle linked sources’ option too for sources that are linked between scenes. This allows you to toggle sources regardless if the scene is active or not.

Record/Output

This option allows you set up recording and streaming on your Stream Deck. The procedures are pretty much the same and the only difference is with Outputs where you will select where you want to output your stream if you have more than 1 channel to output it to.

Microphone/Speakers

You can also assign a function to your Stream Deck that can toggle microphone or speaker audio and they work pretty much the same. For microphones, there is an added option for push to talk should you wish to set it up like that.

Hope this guide helps you with setting up Elgato Stream Deck with XSplit Broadcaster. If you’re already using it, we’d love to know how you’re utilizing it. Share it in the comments section below.

Help us Build the Future of Streaming

We’ve been in the streaming space for a long time now as I’m sure some of you are aware. It really has been an enjoyable ride for us, learning and figuring out a lot of things, seeing how the market evolves and generally just being amazed with its continuous growth.

Looking back, a lot has changed in the market since XSplit (or the company SplitmediaLabs) started. When we began, there was no Twitch.tv yet, YouTube didn’t have live streaming capabilities and there wasn’t really any product anyone can say specializes in live streaming. Most people at the time were doing stuff mostly with their webcam and nothing else.

The present? You guys need no introduction with what’s possible right now. We’re all aware of how much things have changed and improved. And we know it’s just the start and there’s still so much potential to fulfill.

As a pioneering force in the market, we’ve always been proactive in trying to find and bring cutting edge technologies that can help content creators better their craft. Our newest project, CrowdLabs is all about bringing endless possibilities while involving you as part of the family. Watch the video below to learn more:

All you need to do is send us your gamer face footage through the CrowdLabs page and we’ll do the rest. And yes as you saw, we are giving away daily prizes amounting to a total of $3,000. Whether you’re in for the thrill of the project or you just want to win the prizes, or both, this project is for you.

XSplit 3.3 – Macros, Multitrack Audio and more!

If XSplit 3.2 was the fastest XSplit ever, version 3.3 is more about flexibility, adding important new features and options to a streamers toolbox. This update for both XSplit Broadcaster and XSplit Gamecaster will pave the way for more exciting features and improvements down the line. Here’s a quick video summary about XSplit 3.3

A quick shout out to those who have been providing us feedback with our PTR releases. Your efforts help us ensure that our final releases are of the highest quality, and we couldn’t have done it without you.

The biggest feature of this release by far is Macros, which allows you to setup a variety of automated actions that can be triggered in variety of ways. There’s a lot that can be done with this feature and we have actually already demonstrated some in our Macros blog post. We highly suggest you to check this out in case you haven’t yet

Another highly requested feature is the ability to separate microphone and system audio in recordings which is also now possible in this version. This provides more flexibility for post processing your recordings using third-party applications. This feature is also available in XSplit Gamecaster along with some other nice additions such as Mixer chat, follower and subscriber alert, and Twitch Cheers support.

For the full list of new features and bug fixes in this update, refer to the release notes for XSplit Broadcaster and XSplit Gamecaster. We’re excited to hear your feedback and as always, happy streaming!
