Improved Background Removal
Before this update, XSplit VCam was already widely regarded as the industry-leading standard for background removal but it doesn’t mean there’s no room to get better. Background configuration
What’s the use of a funny background GIF or video if you’re not perfectly integrated into it? With the added flexibility to configure your background, you can now easily line up your images exactly as you want, zoom, pan left and right, up and down, flip it around and change the brightness or contrast. Calibration and Automatic Settings
We made improvements here by letting VCam select the best primary and secondary device for acceleration on your machine. This ensures you’re getting the best possible experience right out of the gate without the need to fidget through the settings!
Additionally, the option to select a secondary device for hardware acceleration helps VCam’s performance further by reducing its resource usage.
VCam hardware driver
When you update to version 2.0, it also includes a hardware driver for VCam which allows it to be used as a webcam for an even wider variety of software. The most notable would be Webex and Windows Store applications.
If you’re previously having problems with VCam not showing up in your conference or camera software, this driver should fix all of that.

Microphones are essential peripherals not just for content creation but also in our everyday lives. Whether you’re using it to conduct video conference calls for work, podcasts, or even just doing regular calls with your loved ones, there’s no denying how they’ve become a necessity for most of us.
The focus in this blog post, though, is content creation, which is a group that mostly includes streamers, YouTubers, podcasters, and so on. We’ll touch upon how you can determine which microphone is best for your needs as well as make some general recommendations on the best option for the various price brackets.
Determining the intended use case for the microphone helps in narrowing down your list. If you’re going to be moving a lot, then you need something small for better flexibility. Perhaps a lapel microphone clipped on your shirt would be ideal?
On the other hand, if your room doesn’t have the best soundproofing, you can settle for a dynamic microphone with a suitable polar pattern so you can block out some excess noise.
If you’re looking for the opposite and want to capture as many sound frequencies as possible, then a condenser microphone is your friend. Those are the things that you need to give some consideration to narrow down the list.
Once you’ve determined the specific application, the next step is figuring out how much you’re willing to spend on it.
Budget
A lot of people wanting to upgrade their microphone think they need to shell out hundreds of dollars to do that. That depends on what you’re starting with. If you’re just using your laptop’s onboard microphone or your webcam’s microphone, the cost to upgrade shouldn’t be much unless the aim is to go for the best of the best.
Otherwise, there’s just a lot of good options out there in the sub hundred dollar range, so you don’t need to spend that much.
Different types of microphones
We mentioned some types of microphones above, but in case they sound foreign to you, this is where we’ll be able to expound on them more. Do take note the categorization of microphones vary but for simplicity’s sake, we’re going to be classifying them in the most identifiable way.
Headset – This one probably needs no explanation, but this is the most practical option if you want to minimize the number of equipment that you’re buying. We’ve listed some of the best streaming headsets available today, so you may want to check that out.
Dynamic – Perhaps the most flexible option because you can pretty much use it for any applications, doesn’t need external power while being relatively inexpensive. They are also not as sensitive, which means it’s a good option if you don’t have soundproofing in your area.
Condenser – If you’ve been watching a lot of content creators, it’s highly likely they’re using a condenser microphone. This type of microphone is the opposite of dynamic microphones because it’s highly sensitive and often needs phantom power to work. Those minor ‘inconveniences’ are rewarded by a more precise recording that is perfect for vocals and acoustic instruments.
Ribbon – Ribbon mics are a type of dynamic microphone that utilizes a thin corrugated strip of metal between magnets as opposed to a diaphragm that is attached to a moving coil on a more traditional dynamic microphone.
Ribbon mics are even more sensitive than condenser mics, but in return, you get the most amount of detail without harshness or distortion. Not really recommended if you’re just starting, but if you obsess on having the best sound quality and have the money to spare, then definitely give this a careful consideration.
Lavalier/Lapel – This is the microphone if you require movements since you can easily clip it to your shirt. Its most significant advantage is the form factor because once you have it in a perfect position, you can just forget about it.
This type of microphone is most suitable in public speaking applications where some movements may be needed, and hands-free operation is a must.

사람들이 보통 생각하는 매우 흔한 오해가 하나 있는데, 그것은 바로 인터넷 방송을 1인 사업이라고 착각하는 것이다. 물론 혼자서 모든 것을 진행하는 스트리머도 있긴 하지만 그런 경우는 매우 드물고, 웬만한 정도의 노력으로는 그렇게 되기도 힘들다. 내가 준비한 콘텐츠를 가지고 스트리밍을 진행하는 도중, 도네이션 후원 메시지에 일일이 감사 답변을 하면서 방송 외적, 내적 상황을 모두 관리하고 신경 쓰기란, 당신에게 손과 눈이 네 개씩 있기라도 하지 않은 이상 대단히 힘든 일이다.
이로 인해 일반적으로 많은 인터넷 방송 플랫폼에선, 스트리머가 직접 채팅창 관리자를 임명할 수 있는 권한을 갖게 한다. 채팅창 관리자들은 아프리카, 카카오TV에서는 매니저라고 불리고, 트위치의 채팅창 관리자 정식 명칭은 모더레이터(moderator, 줄여서 mod)이지만, 일반적으로 한국 트위치 문화에선 관리자들을 속칭 ‘진은검’이라고 부른다. 트위치에서는 관리자의 채팅창 아이콘 표시 모양이 검 모양을 하고 있어서이다.

일반적으로 인터넷 방송 관리자들은 시청자들의 원활한 스트리밍 감상에 방해가 될 수 있는 악성 이용자에게 경고를 하거나, 직접적으로 방송 플랫폼에 차단하는 역할을 한다. 가장 흔한 경우는 도배나 욕설 정도고, 지속해서 채팅창에서 분쟁을 일으키는 이용자에게 제재를 가하기도 한다. 어떤 관리자들은 스트리머에게 있어서 또 다른 방송 콘텐츠의 재료가 되기도 한다. 실제로 현재도 활발히 활동하고 있는 몇몇 스트리머들은, 타 스트리머의 채팅창에서 관리자 활동을 진행하던 것으로 인터넷 방송 경력을 시작한 경우가 많다.
그러나 관리자의 활용에 대해 잘못 생각하여 방송 진행에 어려움을 겪는 스트리머도 존재한다. 관리자의 활용에 있어서 몇 가지 원칙을 가지고 있으면 이런 사태를 미리 예방할 수 있다. 관리자 임명은 그 자체로 채팅창 분위기를 좌우할 수 있음으로, 스트리머는 미리 신중하게 고려하고 관리자 임명을 진행하여야 한다.
관리자 기용에 대하여 피해야 하는 타입 중 하나는 분쟁을 좋아하는 사람이다. 관리자는 분쟁을 최대한 방지하는 것이 목적이지, 분쟁의 규모를 키우거나 없던 분쟁을 만들어 선제적 채팅 필터 입장을 취해서는 안 된다. 이러한 운영이 지속해서 반복되면 여론이 점진적으로 악화하여 이후 커다란 갈등의 씨앗이 될 수 있다.

스트리머 본인에게 과도하게 영향력을 행사할 수 있는 관계에 있는 사람도 관리자 임명에 있어서 재고해 보아야 한다. 예를 들어 스트리머의 방송 관리자가 스트리머의 본업 직장 상사나, 아버지 같은 웃어른 가족관계에 있는 사람이라고 쳐 보자. 관리자가 채팅창에서 아무 말이나 하고 아무나 퇴장시킨다고 하여도 스트리머가 그것을 제지하기는 대단히 어려울 것이다. 지인이라고 무작정 관리자 권한을 부여할 것이 아니라, 미리 신중하게 생각하고 결단하여야 한다. 일단 한 번 칼을 주었으면 다시 돌려받기 힘들다.
내 방송을 보고 있는 타 스트리머나 유명인에게 관리자 권한을 주는 경우도 있다. 이 경우 방송의 홍보에 단기적으로 도움이 되나, 장기적으로는 위험부담이 상당한 행위라는 것을 미리 인지하여야 한다. 보통 그런 경우 스트리머가 해당 관리자에 대해 뭔가를 강제할 권한이 없으며, 타 시청자와 해당 관리자 간 마찰이 빚어질 경우 스트리머가 대단히 곤란해지는 경우가 많기 때문이다. 만에 하나 스트리머와 관리자 간 마찰이 생길 경우는 더 설명할 필요도 없다. 해당 관리자는 업계 관계자거나 유명인이므로, 스트리머에게 피해가 배로 올 것이다.
누굴 관리자로 둘지를 결정하였다면, 관리자가 확실한 원칙을 가지고 방송 관리를 진행하는지 스트리머 본인 또한 확인을 다시 진행해야 한다. 스트리머의 기준과 관리자의 기준이 다를 수 있으며, 채팅 규정에 대한 해석도 각기 다를 수 있다. 미리 한 번 서로 간 의견 교환을 통해 생각하고 있는 기준선을 확정 시켜 놓아야 나중에 후회를 만들지 않는다. 관리자가 다수일 경우도 관리자마다 기준이 다를 수 있으므로, 관리자 인원은 최소한도 TO로 구성하는 것이 분쟁을 예방하는 데에 도움이 된다.
관리자는 채팅창 운영에 대해 최소한도로 개입하여야 하고, 어디까지나 스트리머가 정해 놓은 기준선을 기계적으로 지키는 선에서 운영을 진행해야 한다. 관리자 임의의 기준을 적용하여 시청자 제재를 진행할 경우, 그걸 보고 있던 시청자들은 인간이 본능적으로 선호하는 가치 중 하나인 ‘공평함’에 해를 입었다고 느껴, 해당 행동으로 인하여 방송 시청 자체에 대해 불쾌감을 느낄 수 있기 때문이다. 관리자가 얼마나 스트리머에게 충성하여 채팅창 숙청(?)을 진행하였든, 그것은 스트리머 본인에게 절대 도움이 되지 않는 행위라는 것을 스트리머가 관리자에게 직접 인식시켜야 한다.
똑같은 이모티콘이나 상형문자를 도배하거나 심지어 예술감각이 드러나는 도배까지 다양하다.
스트리밍 채팅방 운영 원칙은 최대한 간결하고 이해하기 쉬워야 하며, 이용자 간의 차등 없이 적용되어야 한다. 하지만 방송 시청자 간 차등을 두지 않기는 현실적으로 대단히 힘들다. 스트리머가 아무리 공정하게 운영 원칙을 적용하려고 하여도, 후원 금액이 커서 수익에 도움이 되는 특정 이용자 쪽으로 팔이 굽는 것은 어쩔 수 없는 부분이기 때문이다. 이에 대한 불만 의견이 나올 수 있으나 이는 어쩔 수 없는 부분이다. 냉정하게 생각해 보면 실제로 적용되지 않는 공평 원칙을 내세우는 것 보다, 차라리 후원 금액 내용에 따른 차등 적용을 공개적으로 솔직하게 고지하고 운영을 진행하는 것이 더 나은 결과를 가져올 수도 있다는 것을 생각해야 한다.
어떤 식으로 관리자 권한 부여와 운영을 진행하든 가장 중요한 것은, 관리자가 아닌 나머지 시청자 인원들이 소외감을 느끼지 않도록 하는 것이다. 전체 시청자 수에 비하면 관리자의 인원수는 대단히 적으며(인터넷 방송의 역사 속에서, 시청자 전원을 관리자로 임명하는 실험적 시도는 대부분 실패로 끝났다), 이 적은 인원이 채팅창 분위기를 주도해 갈 경우 시청자들이 방송에서 분리되었다는 생각을 가지며, 이는 방송 전체에 대한 무관심으로 다가온다. 스트리머 본인의 입장에서 어느 쪽이 무난한 선택인지 스스로 생각하여 조율을 진행하도록 해야 한다.
인터넷 방송을 하는 스트리머가 필연적으로 겪어야 하는 요소 중 하나가 있다. 바로 ‘훈수’다.
화면에 등장한 사람이 얼마나 전문가이건, 얼마나 어려운 일을 하든 관계 없이 모든 분야에서 발생할 수 있는 게 훈수다. 멀리 갈 것도 없이 우리 모두 월드컵 시즌마다 그것을 똑같이 느낀다. 게다가 인터넷 방송이 다루는 것은 보통 게임과 같은 대중문화이다 보니, 시청자 중 전문가가 너무나도 많아졌다. 게임 플레이를 하나 실수하기라도 하면 자연스럽게 ‘갈고리 수집’이라고 불리는 물음표 러시가 채팅창을 가득 메운다.
게임에서 실수할때 흔히 볼수있는 채팅창 반응
훈수는 본래 바둑이나 장기에서, 플레이어가 고민하고 있을 때 다음 수를 가르쳐 준다고 하는 뜻이었다. 현재는 의미가 확장되어 거의 모든 분야에서 훈수라는 말이 쓰이고 있다. 훈수의 역사는 깊다. 바둑을 좋아하는 사람이라면 ‘향혈’이라는 말을 알 것이다. 바둑판 뒷면의 사각뿔 모양의 조각을 부르는 말로, 바둑판에 착수를 진행할 때 울림소리 등의 타격감을 향상하기 위해 만들어졌다는 설이 있다. 하지만 이 향혈을 일본에서는 ‘혈류(血溜)’라고 부르고 있다. 직역하자면 ‘핏방울’로써, 훈수꾼의 혀를 잘라 피를 채우는 것이 그 기원이라는 으스스한 설화도 전해진다.
훈수가 스트리머에게 끼치는 부작용으로는 여러 가지가 있는데, 대표적으로 두 가지를 꼽고 싶다. 일단 훈수는 스트리머의 자존감에 영향을 준다. 일단 인터넷 스트리밍을 시작하는 것은 그 자체만으로도 커다란 용기가 필요하다. 자신의 외모와 목소리 등 여러 가지를 공개적으로 송출해야 하기 때문이다. 잘 걸어가던 사람도 갑자기 앞에 카메라를 들이대면 휘청거린다는 말도 있는데, 웹캠 하나 앞에 두고 오디오를 계속 채워가며 1인 진행을 해야 하는 것이 스트리머의 숙명인데, 훈수는 많은 경우 지금 하는 행동이 잘못되었다는 뜻을 담고 있다. 당연히 스트리머의 멘탈에 상처가 가지 않을 수가 없다.
훈수를 두기전에 제 자신의 위치를 먼저 파악하는게…
또한 훈수는 스트리머의 특정 행동을 지시함으로써 방송 콘텐츠에 영향을 직접 주므로, 스트리머의 방송 흐름을 방해한다. 또 다른 문제로는 스포일러가 있다. 훈수는 현재 방송 시점 이후의 콘텐츠 진행을 미리 숙지, 또는 예상한 상태에서 발생하므로 자연스럽게 스포일러를 동반하며, 이는 시청자 간의 마찰을 유발할 수 있다. 이외에도 소위 ‘훈수충’이라고 불리는 사람들은 많은 이유로 환영받지 못한다. 하지만 그들은 어디에나 존재한다. 이세돌이 바둑을 두든, 페이커가 미드 레인에 서든, 그들은 언제나 존재했고, 앞으로도 그럴 것이다. 이런 좋지 않은 훈수를 우리는 왜 굳이 하고 싶어 하는 것일까?
저 치열한 IT업계에서 고개를 돌려 잠깐 인류학을 바라보자. 현재 인류 사회 구성원 비율의 100%를 차지하는 종은 ‘호모 사피엔스’이다. 이 글을 작성한 나도, 이 글을 보고 있는 당신도 모두 같은 호모 사피엔스에 속한다. 우린 우리 이외의 인간 종이 없는 환경에 너무나도 익숙하여 우리도 모르는 새에, 인류는 계속 이렇게 살아왔을 것으로 생각하는 경향이 있으나 실제로는 전혀 그렇지 않았다.
과거에는 이십여 종이 넘는 사람족이 존재하였으나, 일만 년 정도 전에 호모 사피엔스를 제외한 모든 인간종은 멸종하였다. 하지만 이런 생존경쟁 과정에서, 호모 사피엔스가 가장 강인한 인간종이었기 때문에 살아남은 것은 아니다. 호모 에렉투스는 우리보다 월등한 달리기 능력을 갖추고 있었고, 네안데르탈은 훨씬 강력한 근력과 커다란 뇌 용량을 가지고 있었으나, 그들보다 훨씬 약하고 느린 호모 사피엔스들이 결국 살아남은 것이다. 어떻게 이런 일이 가능했을까?
많은 연구는 호모 사피엔스가 ‘집단의 힘’을 통해 자신보다 훨씬 강한 적들을 물리칠 수 있었다고 예상한다. 높은 사회성과 연대, 소통을 통해 현대까지 살아남아 많은 것을 이루어낸 우리 인간들이 가진 가장 강력한 무기는, 지능도 근력도 아닌 바로 곤경에 빠진 타인을 도우려는 마음, ‘동정심’이었던 것이다. 시간이 흘러 시대는 변하고 우리는 이제 인터넷과 키보드를 통해 소통하게 되었으나, 그들의 후예인 우리가 아직도 변함없이 훈수를 두는 것은 어찌 생각하면 인류 그 자체가 가진 본능인지도 모른다.
인터넷 시대로 진화해버린 인류?
동양의 철학자 맹자가 제창한 개념 중 ‘측은지심’이라는 말이 있다. 맹자는 인간은 기본적으로 선하다고 생각하였으며, 우물로 기어가는 아이를 보고 급히 구하려고 드는 것처럼, 곤경에 처한 타인을 도우려는 마음이 누구에게나 있다고 주장하였다. 인터넷 방송 스트리머가 감내해야 할 훈수들은 결국 (훈수하는 본인이 의식하건 아니건) 그런 종류의 어떤 본능적 마음에서 비롯되는 것이므로, 방송을 진행하며 겪는 훈수에 대해 조금만 더 마음을 유하게 가져 보도록 하자.
훈수에 대한 필자의 경험을 하나는. 예전에 어떤 게임을 하던 도중, 나는 다른 사람이 플레이하는 모습을 보고 방금 상황에선 어떤 식으로 플레이하는 것이 아까 시도한 기술보다 효율이 높다고 이야기하였었다 (물론 대부분의 훈수가 그렇게 행해지듯이, 그가 먼저 나에게 물어본 것은 아니었다). 그러나 나에게 돌아온 답변은 충격적이었다. 그가 한 말은 “저도 알고 있는데요?”였다.
그럼 그는 대체 왜 그런 플레이를 했을까? 그 사람은 효율이 좋은 플레이를 통해 승리를 원하는 것이 아니었다. 그냥 게임에서 특정 기술을 많이 사용해서 상대방에게 맞추는 것이 목표였다. 당시 나는 머리를 망치로 한 대 맞은 것 같은 느낌이 들었었다. 그것은 게임의 목적을 ‘승리’가 아닌 다른 것, 조작감이나 그래픽 감상 등에 둘 수 있다는 것을 너무 오래 잊어버린 나에게 가해진 일침이었다. 웹툰 미생 6화에서 주인공 장그래의 이런 대사가 있다. ‘내가 뭐라고, 나 따위가 감히 비루한 훈수 질이냐!’
함부로 훈수하지 말아야 하는 이유가 바로 여기에 있다고 생각한다. 아무리 타인의 플레이가 어리석어 보이더라도, 그 어리석은 플레이 자체, 답을 찾아가는 과정 자체가 그 사람의 게이밍, 또는 스트리밍의 목적일 수가 있다. 개인의 삶은 온전히 개인의 것이고, 삶의 주체는 그것을 낭비할 자유가 있다. 그것은 그들의 결정이고, 그것을 존중해야 한다. 나는 저 때 그 답변을 들은 뒤로 훈수를 잘 하지 않는다. 누구나 소중한 자신만의 게이밍을 가질 권리가 있음으로…
