Adjusting to the new normal, working from home, and staying safe.

2020 caught all of us by surprise, our personal and professional lives ultimately changed, not because we wanted them to but because it was necessary. Companies that rely on employees to be in-office have slowly transitioned into working from home, although not all operations can afford to have 100% of their employees away from their workplace, the majority had to make the move for the health and safety of not only their employees but everyone they have to interact with personally – vendors, clients, etc. While businesses should go on, our lives and health took the utmost priority. Adjusting to the new normal wasn’t going to be easy but we knew we had to do the work!

The challenge of adjusting to the new normal

It was truly a challenging time, it seemed as if we had to make a total shift on how we normally do things. Everything and everyone has stopped to take a look and listen to what we can do to help. There was a need to reevaluate priorities without compromising our people and productivity.

As our employees are based in multiple locations across the globe, and the difference in the implementation of local restrictions and health guidelines, as well as the lockdowns taking place – our management, requested staff to efficiently move their work to their homes. With urgency, our teams strategized how we can smoothly transition our work fully remotely without disrupting core tasks. Necessary office equipment was sent to employees’ homes equipping everyone with the tools required for their tasks. While some require more time in setting up, we also have others who have designated home spaces ready for the remote work we’re set to do in the coming weeks, even months, and now for more than a year and a half.

We’ve done remote work to some extent, so adjusting to the new normal wasn’t too jarring for some, as we have team members who are stationed from different countries across the globe. For any business, it is a bold move to shift the entirety of operations to fully remote. It poses a lot of questions about how we can manage our teams better, how to measure their productivity and focus on what matters most.

How XSplit adapted

At first, there was uncertainty on how we could overcome this obstacle. It must’ve been a management nightmare, not knowing how to make sure that people are doing what they’re supposed to and keeping track of their productivity. One thing that XSplit can be proud of is how much trust the management has put in its employees, letting them manage their time while exhibiting the same productivity during these past months.

Setting up face-to-face meetings has turned into video conferences, emails, and digital calendars. It was during this process we came up with XSplit Presenter, something we discussed here. Meeting our colleagues at the pantry for some coffee and a little chat during a break, or some celebratory pizza and donuts from our coworkers, these have now gone remote as well. Our big end-of-month meetings see our team get food and drinks delivered to their homes!

Our priorities have changed too, more than anything – health and our people’s safety take the utmost importance. Our people are our greatest asset, and taking good care of them is the most important aspect at this time.

From shifting our workplace from our offices in our HQ to a small space in our homes, converting our unused spaces into home offices where we can work was a part of adjusting to the new normal. We were granted a small benefit to have our home spaces decked with the necessary equipment and tools for an efficient work environment. We had our desktops, laptops, and other office equipment shipped to our homes, making sure that nobody is ill-equipped to function as they did when we were still stationed in our office.

We can #workfromanywhere, we have teammates located from across the globe. What we are most proud of is the openness in communication among our peers. Yes, meetings are still inevitable and are much needed since we’re not able to speak to each other face to face, but a simple catch-up call in a week with the team can really help keep us all feeling like a team.

Kudos to our People and Culture team too! They are the go-to people when you need help with anything, they make sure that everyone is well taken care of and they also make sure to make our end-of-the-month meetings more special and engaging with mini-games and cute prizes, which has made adjusting to the new normal easier!

Our work from home set up

Like most companies, we have mostly fully transitioned our operations into our homes. We can safely say that the transition was abrupt but a necessary part of adjusting to the new normal. Could we say that we have fully adapted to our new operating environment? Maybe, maybe not. We can be sure to say that we are continuing to adapt as needed. The challenges and situations are temporary but the learnings and experiences we’ve received have made us stronger, more productive, and more optimistic for the future.

XSplit VCam 2.3 brings AMD GPU Support and more!

XSplit VCam 2.3 is here and with it a whole host of improvements and bug fixes, but the headline feature of this update is our vastly improved AMD GPU support for hardware acceleration! Use your AMD GPU, like you can with an NVIDIA GPU, to power the background blurring, removal, and replacement in VCam taking that processing away from your CPU and improving performance!

What makes 2.3 better?

  • Better AMD GPU Support and improved hardware acceleration! XSplit VCam now uses DirectML for NVIDIA and AMD GPUs. This implementation solves issues with 3 series Nvidia GPUs and works significantly more efficiently on AMD compared to previous versions of VCam.
  • For content creators with AMD GPUs, this will mean running a game at the same time you’re using XSplit VCam will be a much smoother experience.
  • Startup optimizations including reduced loading time and the calibration process when you first launch the app proceeds to the main screen automatically.

Bug fixes!

Like we have with previous updates, we’ve listened to your comments and feedback to improve our app and resolve the most common issues from the previous version:

  • No more app freezing when switching backgrounds
  • Resetting of camera/capture card color properties
  • The “enable HD option” not working on local user accounts with an ampersand in the name, and much more.

If you have any questions or feedback, let us know in the comments section below. You can also chat with us through our social channels @xsplit and our Discord community. Finally, if you have any features you would like to request, you can submit them through the VCam request page here!

The changing education scene and how XSplit VCam can help

We’d like to share with you how the education scene is changing and how XSplit VCam can help you improve your online education experience.

Are you ready for the shift? Everything is going digital these days, and that includes education. We are constantly looking for ways on how to help improve students’ learning and teachers’ experiences through our software offerings.

One of the biggest challenges during these times is transitioning traditional education practices into online learning. Previously, there was an option for traditional face-to-face learning in schools, homeschool, and online learning.

Currently, looks like the viable avenues of learning have dwindled down to prioritize online learning. This also entices the parents to be part of their children’s learning process.

While we cannot use the current circumstance and the pandemic to hinder the pursuit of learning. We face the reality that not everyone is lucky to have devices and access to the internet to pursue it.

Teachers, not just the students, also suffer the same problem. Not all school districts have the support to provide equipment for their teachers. Thus, teachers try to find creative ways to solve this problem.

It also means that we have to look for software that can make online education and communication easier and convenient.

There is a lot of free software available on the internet. What varies is the quality of said software and the level of after-sales service provided thereafter.

In this article, we’d like to share how the education landscape is changing and how good background removal software like XSplit VCam can help both students and teachers in their new digital classroom experience.

Creation of online education content

At this time, there are two kinds of people making educational content online – (1) existing content creators, and (2) teachers.

These are content creators who are already on their chosen platforms. They create content to share knowledge in the form of DIYs, practical tutorials, and reviews.

Teachers and other education professionals create online materials that want to share their knowledge. They are those who are transitioning from traditional learning avenues to online video and streaming.

Shifting from traditional face-to-face learning to online

Advantages:

  • Shifting from traditional to online learning is a safer approach to learning during the pandemic. It lessens the physical contact with individuals who might or not have the virus.
  • Teachers and educators can now shift from their traditional ways of teaching. They upgrade their teaching methods with modern technology, as needed.
  • This creates an opportunity for educators to explore and learn more. Exploring online tools, free and/or paid, to be able to effectively improve their skills.
  • They learn new skills and are adept at using apps and platforms that students use to make their lessons more engaging.

While there are a lot of advantages, there are also disadvantages to the current online education set-up.

Disadvantages:

  • Not everyone has the financial capability and the right resources to shift into online learning. There are free software versions available and there are those paid ones as well.
  • If you have a device on hand, is the device is compatible with the apps needed for online learning? It has to at least run the required apps at bare minimum settings.
  • The Internet connection can also be hell. Connectivity is also an essential part of the online learning experience. But not everyone has access to it. A stable connection is a luxury that normal low-income families cannot afford.
  • We also have to take into consideration the learning curve for teachers who are not so adept with technology. Most have been so used to traditional learning practices; it can take time before they fully immerse themselves into online teaching.
  • And lastly, the most challenging part of teaching online is how to hold the attention of the students during class. If holding their attention was a challenge during face-to-face learning, how much of a challenge will it be now when distraction is an alt-tab away.

At first glance, it can be disheartening to know that there are more disadvantages than advantages at this point in the transition. But this is merely a learning curve that we can overcome, the education sector can overcome this challenge for those who are pursuing their education in these tough times.

Classroom creativity

Getting creative with how you can present your lessons differently can be a challenge for educators. It takes a lot of time and effort to create something physically. What more to make things digital pleasing and interesting for their students.

This opens an opportunity for teachers to explore the use of new methods. Try out new tools to make their lessons fun and engaging.

Say, using a background removal tool during an online class and replace your background with something interesting – it could be from changing your class’ background theme for the week, or as the teacher presenting the lesson, you can share a YouTube video of the topic in discussion for the day. The choices can be endless, it only depends on the person’s creativity on what more you can do with the software of choice. XSplit VCam can help with easily changing up the background, either by blurring out some distracting parts of your workspace, removing it totally, or replacing it with another interesting image.

Uses for XSplit VCam in education

Make your online class interesting with changing backgrounds

Freelancers know this more than anyone, the stress of not having a good space for that very important video call. Not everyone is fortunate to have a separate office space with a sleek background setting. Most of us are likely to only have the living room or kitchen as a background. Not to mention, our bedrooms; no matter how clean and tidy you can get it, it’s simply not appropriate for a meeting set up. XSplit VCam can help effectively and visually transform your background into something more appropriate.

XSplit VCam is one addition to our suite of software that caters to improve your video calls, meetings, and conferences by having the option to blur, remove, and even replace your background.

XSplit VCam for blurring, removing, and replacing your background.

Imagine the stress of our educators, who’ve prepared for their lessons. And also struggle to use new technology to maximize their efficiency in teaching online. XSplit VCam helps in making sure that your online class set-up is professional looking and less stressing on how distracting your background can be.

Improve video calls with a little tech experience

Another advantage of using XSplit VCam is that once you’ve set it up on your computer, you can easily use it in any communication software of choice by choosing XSplit VCam as your camera source.

Is Vlogging and IRL streaming for you?

In the last few years, video content has been a leading source of information next to blogs and infographics. Many advertisers also mentioned that an effective video can lead up to 80% in sales. Apart from video content that is widely consumed on the internet, making things pop or being different from normal video-on-demand (VOD) is a trend for most content creators and other marketing professionals.

The growing popularity of video content (VC), most professionals can say that content marketing has become an integral part of any company’s marketing mix. And that video and live content are one of the trends that we cannot neglect.

Aside from blogs, VC has a steady viewer base compared to other forms of content on the internet.

In the last few years, video content has been a leading source of information next to blogs and infographics. Many advertisers also mentioned that an effective video can lead up to 80% in sales. These days, video content has become widely consumed on the internet. And being different from normal video-on-demand (VOD) is a must for content creators and marketing professionals who want to differentiate their content from others.

With the growing popularity of video content (VC), it can be said that content marketing has become an integral part of any company’s marketing mix. And that video and live content are one of the trends that we cannot neglect.

Aside from blogs, VC has a steady viewer base compared to other forms of content on the internet.

Why should you get into IRL content?

The content on the internet is constantly and rapidly changing and we constantly need to rise to the challenge of developing original content. Content that can spark thought leadership and maybe even go viral.

These days, video content or video-on-demand content tends to be more lackluster and uninteresting. Thinking of ways to revolutionize the content scene, most individuals strive to think of ways on how they can diversify their content and make them stand out from the rest.

Here comes the proliferation of vloggers and real-life content streamers who share more than their love for gaming and lifestyle content – but also share a glimpse of what happens in their real-life in video form – raw, unedited, and live-streamed or otherwise.

Trending broadcasts

We content creators have been in our homes thinking of ways of creating content that is relatable and entertaining – while everyone is streaming their gameplays and other DIYs, which has been a common scene now; others are turning into what makes them different from the rest – which is sharing snippets of their life on the internet.

They say that no two people are alike, even twins are different. We see lifestyle influencers everywhere and they are on different platforms. We do not want to see different people playing the same game every time, we want to see more. Here is where the increase of vloggers (video blog poster) who share their life in edited video format and platforms who allow individuals to stream real-life content straight from their phones to the internet like Facebook Live, Afreeca TV (a popular streaming service in South Korea), Bilibili (popular in China), Twitch (mobile app for Android and IOS), YouTube mobile app (with eligibility requirements to access the live stream feature on mobile) and many more.

IRL streaming

What makes IRL streaming services so popular these days, in China, it is recorded to have at least 560 million users as of March this year that accounts for 62% of the country’s internet users.

You see, there is no such thing as people in broadcasts doing the same thing – they might be doing the same challenges and content themes but ultimately what makes it different is their personalities. These IRL streamers are more of live hosts of their own broadcasts or shows. How they differentiate themselves from other streamers is them being their authentic selves and promoting their content to people who have similar interests.

From a viewer’s perspective, an IRL streamer is more likely to have in-the-moment engagement with the viewers which makes them feel involved in the creation of their content. No matter how small the engagement – a shoutout, when a streamer reads your comments or answers your questions, responds to a request, does a viewer’s suggestion – it creates a personalized experience for the viewers and a custom content that cannot be duplicated by other creators.

ASMR and Mukbang

You might’ve seen this floating around the internet for a while. ASMR or auto sensory meridian responses that induce a tingling feeling in the viewer, and which aim to calm, nurture, or soothe.

Mukbang a portmanteau from the Korean words for “eating” (먹는; meogneun) and “broadcast” (방송; bangsong) – or simply an eating broadcast. This was first introduced in 2009 on AfreecaTv – and now it has spread beyond Korea and became a global trend.

Content as simple as someone enjoying a meal can be entertaining as well. In a society where we lack the time to sit down and enjoy our food. This kind of content shares how it looks like when someone prepares and enjoy the food that they’re consuming. Someone might ask, how can something so simple be so interesting to others? Everyone eats, but not everyone has time to truly enjoy eating. To someone who has a fast-paced lifestyle, eating has become merely a task. To consumers of ASMR food, mukbangs are a glimpse of how enjoyable consuming food can be.

What is vlogging?

So, what technically is vlogging? A vlog is a video blog or an online diary in video form. Back in the day, the creation of blogs is more of an entry from personal experience, these days the repertoire of content has highly diversified – from the daily life hacks, do-it-yourself tutorials, video game walkthroughs, educational videos, and industry presentations to name a few. With the changing times, aside from reading the normal text-based content, individuals have gravitated more towards moving images or videos.

Essentially, vlogging creates a window where audiences can take a glimpse at the content creator’s life. Since there are no two people alike, an overview of other people’s lives tend to be interesting to most audiences. Most people can say that they can relate to these experiences. This kind of content also humanizes the individual making them more relatable.

Getting Major FOMO

Video-on-demand or edited and uploaded video is still valuable. But we have to admit that live broadcasts or real-time streaming provide a sense of entertainment instant gratification.

We call this phenomenon, FOMO, the fear of missing out has become something we’re scared of. Are you the type of person who needs to be in the know of current events and trends? And tends to have major anxiety over things that we feel that we should know or should be informed about?

These kinds of content when consumed by normal viewers tend to feel more updated. It’s like audiences are a step closer to knowing the content creators’ life, even just a glimpse of it. More like friends who are catching up on their other friends. Or family members sharing how their day went.

As online content consumers, what do you think about vlogging and IRL streaming? Is it the kind of content that you’re interested in watching? Do you already have a favorite vlogger and IRL streamer? We’d love to know your thoughts on this trend. Feel free to connect with us on our socials and let us know your thoughts – Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram.

Hey Gamers, How’re you doing?

We’ve been going through some tough times these past few weeks. A lot has been happening and we wish that everything could be better.

You may be part of the few who has been too tired lately. Feeling drained even when you haven’t really done anything during the day. You can be feeling helpless and lacking the enthusiasm for things and activities that spark joy in your life. We feel quite mundane and restless because of the unease of collectively all the things happening around us. Not to mention the widespread pandemic and the multiple socio-cultural things that our society is facing.

Let’s call it for what it is – the world is a mess right now. The mind might be jumbled with a lot of concerns, and that’s okay. It’s okay to feel that way. It’s time that we acknowledge the feeling and thoughts, and reflect on those and how we can make things better. Make things better for ourselves, our family, and our friends. How we can make a difference, no matter how small is still something rather than doing nothing.

We’ve talked about mental health on the blog a few times in the past year. It has grown to be a fact that we don’t talk about it enough. Whether for us gamers or content creators, it’s for everyone, no exceptions. There is a stigma around mental health that we need to overcome. And soon, we will be able to accept and find resolution to the illness. Yes, folks, it is an illness where most people tend to fail to seek medical attention. These same people are also too afraid of being discriminated against.

Let your mind and body rest

It’s been a few weeks, even months since our normals have changed. Our new routines might have started as being productive – making the most of our flexible time – with most working from home and the latter, sadly might’ve been off work due to the nature of their work. These times were, for most of us, a time of reflection and rest. But, that being said, you feel restless with the pandemic looming over our heads. The unease of whether or not we are able to support our daily necessities with a lack of resources.

For those with diagnosed illnesses, our mental health might’ve taken a turn for the worst. And we can’t help it. The anxiety and stress have piled on so much that it might be unbearable. The insecurity of whether you’ll still have work and bring food to the table.

Personally, pushing yourself to be productive at this time is actually counterproductive – stressing yourself to be productive, saying to yourself that there is no excuse for you not to be able to do things. The fact remains that we are all trying our best to cope with what the circumstances bring us. As I’ve said in the last blog, we’re all in a pandemic trying to work from home. Whether we are one of the lucky ones who are able to still have a job during these tough times, it can still be understandable that you are less likely to be able to be as productive as before. Be nice to yourself and try not to be too harsh.

One thing that works, for me at least, is guided meditation. It gets me through the hardest times when I tend to be truly anxious of completing even the smallest tasks. It helps me realign my focus and help me accomplish little wins throughout the day.

When everything else fails, and you just can’t get up for the day – then rest. Give yourself time to reel in those thoughts and emotions. It’s okay. Just don’t forget to tell your teammates that you’ll be out for the day to take care of yourself. Don’t just disappear on the people who you work with, okay?

Rest but don’t give up, resting your mind helps clear your thoughts and help you be more attuned to your responsibilities.

It’s okay to not feel okay

When resting is not enough – this is for our brethren who are currently battling their inner self. If you need to hear it from someone else, you need to know that what you’re feeling is valid and rational. You don’t need someone else to say that you’re making a big deal out of a molehill. You do not need validation from others, what you worry about and what you fear most is reasonable in your perspective and nobody can tell you to believe otherwise.

While self-awareness is a good thing, being aware of your surroundings and what is actually happening in your country can actually cause you more stress. We acknowledge that we need this information to be better informed on how we go on in our daily lives during the pandemic. But it cannot be neglected that this can also cause you much anxiety and can trigger thoughts that you’re not okay but you can work through it and will be okay in the future. That this too shall pass.

Distract yourself

Distract yourself from negativity and pursue activities that encourage you to engage your creative mind. Yes, playing video games all day and cooking/baking in the kitchen can be boring after a few days – these days allow us to explore the things that we planned to do but simply didn’t have the time for.

It helps to create a list of the activities (that you can do while social distancing and staying at home) that you’ve been planning to do but didn’t have time for. During the quarantine period, you have all the time you need to do these things. We might not have a definite date when all this will end, but hey, here’s a good time to start working through that list.

Whether it be starting an edible garden in your backyard or a small balcony, growing your own food can be a wonderful way to distract yourself and at the same time cultivate plants that you can actually eat!

Learning a new skill can be another thing that you can do. Learning a new language, drawing, using a creative software or learning how to stream your content if you’re a beginner content creator looking to level up your content during the summer. You can start small with learning a little XSplit Gamecaster. If you’re interested in making your own YouTube channel, why not learn a little editing with XSplit Express Video Editor. You can do a lot at this time. It’s best to get started on something that you’ll benefit from in the long run.

Divert your energy

As much as we don’t want to dwell on the negativity, it’s almost everything that we’re focusing on with everything happening around us. You can also say that it’s inevitable to not know and dwell on the things. And when information is almost everywhere, these details can be obtained at a click of a button whether we’re on Google or on social platforms. With the news and updates regarding the pandemic, and the status of our government taking action on how they can minimize the burden on the economy and our cost of living. That’s out of our control, and there’s nothing to do with those things but worry constantly on things that we cannot do anything about.

What we can do, now that’s where we can shift our focus. Dwelling on the things that we cannot change is will only cause stress and despair in the long run. We worry, yes – to be able to better prepare ourselves for the worst. But, thinking about it – strategizing on the things that we can do does wonders for our mental health.

What you can do, no matter how small, can still be a monumental thing for yourself. Start with the things that you can do for yourself. What are the things that you can do to make daily living better? Making a list of the things you need at the grocery store is one thing that you can do. To make sure that you have everything you need and you don’t need to worry about forgetting anything from the store. Taking time off from social media is another thing that we can do – social media can be toxic at times. Too many people talking about their opinions, and opinions are not facts that we need to accept. Too much information can be harsh on our system, it takes time for us to actually process it. Know what you need to know and get off your phone, there’s less toxicity that way.

o to make sure that you have everything you need and you don’t need to worry about going back to the store because you forgot something.

We hope that you’re doing well! May you and your family have the gift of good health and are safe at this time. We can make it through this, hang in there my friends.

Adjusting to Our New Normal

Before anything else, we’d like to ask, how’s everyone doing?

The current circumstance we’re living in is quite a total shift from what we have been used to. The past few weeks have been quite a struggle to most. To the more privileged ones, a time that allows for slowing down and relaxation. I’m not here to talk about social disparity but to share what I have learned through these past days. These days of coping with the changes in our routines, how we adapted to the current. Thus creating a new normal – if not for all, at least for what I have experienced.

We’re all experiencing a new way of living during this pandemic, nobody really knows when this will end. What we know is that we have to move forward and not settle on the negatives. The what we cannot have at the moment – but take into full grasp what we can do to make things better.

The new normal, in the financial world, is something we can refer to the time of a financial crisis during and after a recession. Something that was usually abnormal but has now become commonplace in society. For example, practices that most people don’t do pre-pandemic has now become something so normal that we do today.

What’s good about humans is we learn to adapt for survival. Adjusting can be very challenging, but we can overcome and transform it into new conformity that makes coping easier.

We’re seeking normality, adapting our old routines to something better and more suitable at this time of social-physical distancing. Some of such are turning physical activities into digital ones. Herein listed are some of the things that, we think, have had a major shift – there could be more but we’ll stick to these for now.

Working from home

Working from home or remote work was once something only freelancers or specific remote workers do. It wasn’t something that’s normal for us in the workforce. We usually get up early to prepare for our workday, commute and perform our tasks within the confined space of office space.

Some companies are now realizing the fact that some components of their current systems can be transformed. The employees who were once confined into a cramped space of an office can now work from anywhere and not disrupt their productivity and company operations.

Working from home also means that you need to simplify your work routine, with the kind of stress that we are experiencing, the more complicated tasks can be – the more unlikely we are to complete those tasks. A simplified workflow can be achieved by setting a goal for yourself for the day; setting a manageable schedule with the main task, and subsidiary tasks that can easily be accomplished through a smooth transition or flow. Easing in from one task to the next. We might be working from home, but it doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t take your breaks. Pacing yourself through your workload can be essential to complete your task. We listed a few things that might be helpful for you on this blog post right here – where we also talk about working from home and remote work.

Digital catchups

We are now at a time where we are shifting from physical meetings to digital events. We are realizing that meetings can be done remotely! We’ve had that meeting that could’ve been an email; but in this time of the pandemic, you still kinda miss your colleagues when you still had the chance to have those face-to-face meetings.

Now, you have to admit that nobody has the perfect backdrop when it comes to online meetings right? You might be settled in your bedroom with less than desirable surroundings. Sufficient lighting might be lacking, or have your room cluttered with laundry that you’ve yet to fold. Unless you’re a hardcore content streamer and have the space and equipment; you’re like the rest of us who are struggling to find that perfect space for your (video) meeting.

But fret no more, XSplit VCam has been a lifesaver for our team’s weekly video conference calls? E-learning and streaming services

Individuals and businesses today are turning into streaming to get their information across. There are more businesses who are launching online learning programs during these past few weeks compared to the previous months. It’s main goal is to encourage more people to enroll and learn things during the quarantine. Gone are the days that you need to travel long distances to attend a seminar or a talk, some of these are free.

Streaming is not solely used for broadcasting video gameplays anymore. More and more are getting into streaming services to expand their brand reach and awareness. We can say that the way we’re doing our business now is shifting into a more digital sphere.

More than streaming videos and movies, e-learning services and online seminars are becoming more proliferating now more than ever. Businesses also have been offering their services through webinars and sharing their knowledge on how streaming content can enhance your reach and expand your brand. We’ve tried a hand of this ourselves when our team handled a webinar dedicated to teaching people how streaming can grow your business.

Online shopping and secure online banking services

Not being able to go out of our homes to purchase what we need, online shopping has become a necessary service that we never thought of. Shifting our consumer habits from the touch before you buy to getting almost anything you need through the internet.

You have to agree with me when I say that online shopping is a lifesaver. Although some courier services might be limited depending on your location and there might be a little delay in deliveries due to high demand – you could say that online shopping is one thing that we did not realize that can be something efficient and essential.

Playing more games and getting creative

There was a time that people say that playing video games can be a waste of time, well certainly not this time. We’re seeing a lot of people growing an appreciation for Animal Crossing on the Nintendo Switch, a far cry from previous years that even normal people get into the hype for a new game but it didn’t hang on long enough. People are playing more video games that is not limited to those on the PC; but also on consoles like the PS4 among many others.

Not only are video games a part of our daily quarantine life but it is starting an appreciation for content creators who share game walkthroughs in VOD or live broadcasts. Facebook Gaming (fb.gg), for instance, has been growing quite rapidly in 2019. In the Verge article, it mentioned that fb.gg has made it easier for anyone to start streaming.

More than Facebook Gaming, software like XSplit Gamecaster has made setting up a stream easier and more efficient for newbies and seasoned content creators alike. Whereas, editing a highlight stream can be made faster with XSplit Express Video Editor. We wouldn’t want to toot our own horn, but give these apps a chance and let us know what you think.

A shift in priorities and self-care

We might be one of the lucky ones, who are lucky enough to be able to work from home and have an income during the pandemic. We have to realize that not everyone has the same privilege. While we are at home taking care of ourselves and our family, there are those who are not able to take care of themselves and support a living during a challenging time.

We implore our readers to be compassionate to those who are not as blessed as the privileged few. We need to understand that people can have different opinions and priorities at this time, and we also have different ways of how we take care of ourselves – physically and most especially, mentally.

Now trending: Remote work and working from home

There’s a growing number of professional workforce that’s opting to work remotely these days. In an article, it mentioned that this is a trend that will change how companies establish their workplace and workflows.

Being able to work anywhere changes how it can be done, regardless of location and circumstance. With a working laptop or tablet (or even your smartphone) and a decent internet connection – you’re good to go whenever and wherever you are in the country or overseas.

Now, let’s take a look at how this trend is changing our workplace dynamics.

With SplitmediaLabs, developers of XSplit being a Global company and having employees all over the world, we have personnel remotely working from home and or shared co-working spaces.

Similar to most companies, in order to diversify and create a flexible working environment – remote work and working from home posed as a good alternative to traditional work in a cubicle and/or in an office.

Not being able to report directly to the office should not be an excuse to get capable and dependable staff to leave our companies due to negligible and personal circumstances, right?

This work alternation has allowed numerous people to gain and maintain work, and at the same time – have time for their families and friends.

Remote work can be great when done well. But it can also be very challenging with the constant distractions that come from self-managing your productivity from home. So, here are some things to consider when opting for the work from home benefit.

Personal discipline

While I’m a strong believer in you do you – I believe that working by yourself without supervision requires a lot of discipline and you will require yourself certain boundaries for yourself during work hours.

It’s tempting to sleep in a little more since there’s no commute to worry about, but it helps that you set yourself a designated time to wake up and prepare yourself for work.

Say, if your work starts at 9:00 AM and ends at 5:00 PM; set yourself up for waking at least an hour before you begin your tasks so that you can give yourself time to fully wake up and prepare yourself for the day ahead.

You don’t want to be scrambling around early in the morning, would you?

Setting up blocks of time to accomplish certain tasks can be helpful too. I’m a firm believer in the debt snowball method. In this method, people are looking into settling their debt – tackling the smallest to largest amount as needed.

Setting little wins to get you going and not give up your end goal. The same with tasks, when working by yourself. When tasks pile up, you are most likely to get stressed and confused about which one to complete first.

You can use the main idea for the snowball method with the Eisenhower Matrix, deciding which tasks to prioritize.

You can start working on which ones you need to get done now. And get smaller tasks out of the way – giving you more time to complete more difficult and bigger tasks.

For those who are not fans of the freestyle checklist method, the Pomodoro technique might be for you. I also learned to call it time blocking. Set 25-minute intervals to get a task done and have 5-minute breaks in between, as explained in the infographic below:

Aside from making sure that you have all your tasks listed according to priority with a set deadline you’ve made for yourself (regardless of whether there is a deadline or not); now, let’s talk about personal hygiene.

Yep, personal hygiene

How tempting is it to just wake up from your sleep, get your laptop and start your working day in your PJs and an unwashed face.

To work from home successfully, it’s required to have a semblance of a structure for yourself and your mental wellbeing. While there may not be other people around to see you, and the temptation for working in your underwear is there, it’s still important for your productivity (and for those potential emergency video calls) to take care of yourself. In short,  don’t be a slob.

Brush your teeth, take a shower, wear a fresh set of comfortable loungewear and have your breakfast before work, not during. This way you can also minimize the chance of getting distracted by completing your task or worrying about your coffee getting cold. (Editor’s note: though seriously, drink cold brew instead)

Available technology

These days, the company is sure to issue a laptop or device suited for your tasks.

In most cases, you most likely have the equipment and software ready but your internet connection might still be quite a challenge, especially in parts of the world where fast home internet is still difficult to come by. Data connectivity can vary wildly per location, if this is a problem for you, it might be a good idea to open this conversation with your IT personnel or direct manager. You can be issued a pocket hotspot or VPN access (a virtual private network) to make work more seamless.

Effective communication

Make sure that you have what you need to be able to effectively communicate with your teammates and your manager. It would be nice to have an update at least once a day on the progress of your current and ongoing tasks.

You have apps available on your phone, tablet or computer to make communicating easier. Skype, Discord, Slack, Google Meet, and productivity apps like Trello, Hootsuite, and etc.

Your location might not be ideal when making professional calls. Taking meetings at a cafe or maybe you were not able to clean up your room prior to the call can be a hassle. There are background removal tools out there, but we feel that our XSplit VCam is one tool that you can easily use regardless of circumstances, thanks to its powerful background replacement, removal, and blurring.

These are just a few short tips to make working from home that little bit more bearable, sometimes losing the structure of working at an office can be disruptive not only to your productivity but your mental wellbeing too. So make sure to take extra care when starting your day, eat well, have the right tools at disposal and complete your work with the same level of dedication as you would from home.

Are you also working from home or remotely from your workplace? Do you also use background removal tools for your video conference calls?

Be real: Why streamers should embrace authenticity

Streamers, they’re all over the place these days. But what sets them apart from other content creators who do gaming and other streaming content on the internet?

Let’s have a real talk about people on the internet these days. Some people, for the sake of individuality and instant popularity, will create an alternate persona.

A persona that is likely to be more relatable and fun – to gain more attention and fame. Take for example, content creators who openly admit that the character they portray on their videos and social media can be a far cry from the real person when the cameras are off. This character they have created can be a polar opposite of who they are, but for the sake of being a likable person, this persona has been created to garner the attention of the viewers and be as relatable as possible – the perfect personality that’s likely to shoot into popularity the fastest. This does not only apply to Instagram influencers and VOD content creators, but it can also be everywhere. The streaming community cannot be spared.

Characterization is all over the internet, you’re not sure whether the person on their social media is the real person instead of a perfect persona created for the likes and fame. Here is where authenticity can be key to differentiate you from the rest of the current internet personas out there.

You are unique

There is no other person like you, not even twins are the same. Do you agree? What makes you – you – makes you different. How is that a plus?

Conformity to what society dictates can be a bane for our creative existence. It simply places us in a box where it compartmentalizes who we are as human beings. You can be one thing in this life and if it doesn’t fit it any of the things that society has listed – then you’re weird or different. Back in the day, being different is often seen as being a social deviant.

These days, being different is highly celebrated. Some find it fun and entertaining, the person is seemingly living the best life he/she has. But is it all real? That’s the million-dollar question, right?

Authenticity, what?

Being an authentic person, what does it mean and how difficult can it be to become my best authentic self?

Be yourself.

But how can we identify our real selves in this world of internet personas and characterizations – we start with ourselves. Yes, simply put look at yourself in the mirror and ask yourself – who am I? What makes me, me?

We constantly look up to famous streamers and gamers for inspiration but haven’t you looked into yourself and see that what makes you yourself is something that can be deemed interesting.

Some people might say:…but I’m not that interesting, why would people be interested in me?”

Let’s go back to the idea, no two people are alike and twins are different

You can be doing one thing but how you do it makes the difference and no two persons have the same outlook, it can be similar but be totally different at the same time.

Social media perfection

What is authenticity in the world of social media perfection and almost everything can be professionally staged? How do we even know if someone is being authentic and real online? There are a lot of people who staged a personality or character to portray for their audiences. It can be a procured personality based on the perceived persona that the audience reflects on the content creator that’s not necessarily the real person.

We often question if something is even real in this digital age where things aren’t always what they seem. Photos and videos can be faked, edited and perfected in a certain way. People can be replaced by AI (and even clones! In the near future, the existence of one’s true self is about to go extinct. Just to get the most likes and comments on socials.

The reality is that authenticity in social media is dying. Being real is a dying trend since it doesn’t get you as many likes or hearts – perfection and being ideal is what gives you attention unwanted or otherwise.

Streamers being authentic

In an era of live broadcast, most say that they watch the stream not for the game or content streamed – but because of the person doing the streaming.

People amass a huge following out of their personality, how they talk and carry themselves online. If you think you’re boring, then think again. No two people are alike, remember? So, you might be doing normal things but in your own way – that makes it all different. Your reactions and comments, opinions and suggestions are all different because your experiences and endeavors shaped you to become the person who you are today. You possess a story that only you can tell, you have a path that only you walked through and paved.

Don’t burn yourself out

Nobody can have a perfect and consistent personality online, especially when it’s necessarily staged. Some people say that they get content burnout because they cannot churn out content that the audience might like. Having a perceived character also does the same thing, it gets tiring to be a person who you want people to see you as. Being yourself and having fun streaming out there is priceless – it takes the burnout off your chest and you get to genuinely enjoy what you are doing. Don’t make it a task and make it your own experience.

We hope that it some way we made our point across, you don’t need to be anybody but yourself when you’re streaming or creating content out there. Being you is the best characterization that you can portray and we’re here to support it!

Stop waiting for the perfect moment, and start streaming now

We’re now in 2020. New year, new me? Or finally, the year where you start streaming? So what’s stopping you from creating the content that you want?

Fear is an obstacle that everyone faces regardless of profession. Whether it be fear of failing or rejection, or not being good enough for our chosen path – even the fear of the unknown can play a role in you pursuing or not the things that you plan or want to do. They say that you can never be fully ready unless your mind is determined to push through it.

We talk a lot about streaming on the blog and how we can help content creators make the most engaging content there is with our software. You may be a skeptic, why streaming? Should you do it too? I mean, why not right? In previous articles, we’ve made lists on what else you can stream, what to say in-camera, things to check before every stream and many more to help you get started.

Now, let’s chat about why you should be streaming and why you should do it now. No more excuses.

It’s all about the timing

When are you ready to start your streaming journey? Is there such a thing as perfect timing? Personally, if you’re lucky, yes there might be perfect timing, but for the not so lucky people on earth, we need to create opportunities and make that perfect timing ourselves!. When there is none, we create one.

Waiting is a waste of time. Again, it depends on luck on whether we receive a sign that will prompt us to start doing what we’re supposed to do. Issac Newton had the opportunity to discover the law of gravity when an apple fell on his head. But Einstein created a new study where he studied gravitational waves that do not exist in Newton’s law of gravity. Same with content creators, some are lucky to receive an opportunity to discover but most of us must create those opportunities ourselves because it cannot be made for us. Pave our own way and start this adventure with one step at a time.

In the wise words of Nike, just do it.

Regret

You don’t want to be that person who keeps on referencing the past, right? If only you started this back then, and it might have grown to be something bigger by this time. Most of us have gone through the same experience, the same conversation in our minds with the what-ifs and what could’ve been. The regret is killing us slowly, figuratively.

We, humans, have a thing for the past. We love to reminiscence and explore the what-ifs – what if I did this or that when I was younger, we can only imagine the possible outcomes. Reality is, not to burst your bubble, it will all remain an idea if you don’t do something about it. You’d love to explore the options but are too scared to actually put things into action. That’s what separates the successful people of this generation – putting things into action and taking the risk of doing what they want to do. If it fails, then it fails – you cannot change that. But the lesson here is that you have no regrets because you were able to do it anyway.

Be brave enough to do the things you’d want to do, if it fails then it’s bound to fail. It’s up to us if we want to stand up and make it better. There will be no more room for regrets since we’ve done it! No more what-ifs or it could’ve been me.

Who is your audience

People are intimidated to start their streaming journey because they feel that they have no audience. Who will watch my stream? Would I look like a loser and stream with no viewers?

It depends on your purpose – who are you streaming for?

Some are looking into streaming and building a community around it. There are also those who stream because it’s fun and it doesn’t matter whether they have viewers or not. Essentially, it’s up to you.

Share your knowledge

If you stream, what benefit can you give the audience aside from humor and entertainment? Most gamers tend to stream for fun and showcase their game experience. But underneath the fun is sharing how they play a game.

Gamers show their progression in the game, how to complete quests and tasks, where to farm an item and how to defeat a difficult boss.

Game streaming is more than playing a game, it is also a way to share knowledge and strategy without you knowing. Ingenious eh?

Have fun

What matters most is that you’re having fun and you enjoy what you do. At the end of the day, it’s your happiness and fulfillment that truly matters.
